RYAN OVERBECK - NORTHWOOD DESIGN

Northwood started from a simple need to create.

I’ve always believed creativity runs through everyone, and in my 20s I found mine in wood.

I never went to school for it, but I threw myself into the craft—studying, practicing, and repeating until it became second nature. Over time, working with hardwoods grew from a hobby into a real passion.

For me, design is about intention. Every cut, angle, and line carries meaning, shaped by a clear idea of what the piece is meant to be.

Using traditional joinery and technique, each piece is built with structural integrity and refined to last generations.

The Bloodwood Inlay

I’ve been itching to do an inlay on a project. A local lumber yard gave me some free bloodwood to play around with and I’ve been waiting for the right moment to use it.

My shop is small, so having all this wood piled up is honestly inconvenient.
But every time I look at it, there’s a fire in me that says GO.
So much potential—like a blank page to a writer or a fresh canvas to a painter.

Sometimes that fire gets snuffed out.
By real things or imagined ones: limited time, creative drought, self-doubt…
This week, it was sickness. Took down the whole house.

We’re on the upswing now. I’m resisting the urge to jump in too soon.
But I’m ready—and it won’t be long 🤘🏻

Something I wish I’d stop forgetting:
The first try at anything will probably suck.
Even if it turns out okay, it’s still not what it could be.
Of course it’s not.

So why get mopey and down about it?

This is a reminder to myself—and maybe to someone else:
Sometimes you just have to do something.
Knock out that first one.
Then figure out the rest.

The Chefs Table

This counter-height prep table owns the kitchen. Stunning tile inlays you can’t help but touch and solid red oak throughout. A repeat client keeps raising the bar — and I’m stoked with the outcome. I wanted to keep this one for myself.

The Salt Box

Made of walnut and curly maple. This salt box is an intersection of two of my passions: woodworking and cooking. Salt is critical to the success (or failure) of any dish. Used in every meal, every day, it deserves a permanent place right next to the stovetop.

Kids Table

I took a quick side quest and built this table for my kids before they are too big 😭 In order to learn the craft, sometimes it helps to build other peoples pieces. This design is a straight cut from a huge inspiration of mine squarerule furniture. I learned a ton from this simple and elegant design, and I will be utilizing similar techniques in the future.

Now it just needs chairs 🤔🪑

As I build this cherry table, I keep thinking back to my childhood—how I’d sit down at a kids’ table and immediately feel excited. Why? Because the kids’ table was where the best things happened. A craft, a coloring page, a Lego spaceship, a family dinner with friends. The possibilities felt huge.

I think we naturally connect feelings to objects. That’s why, as adults, when we visit a grandparent’s house or dig through an attic and find an old toy, we’re instantly pulled back. It stirs something in us.

Becoming a father has made me feel this even more as I watch my boys grow. I’m super psyched to get this thing finished and see my kiddos scribble all over it. I hope it holds a similar place for them as they beat it up over the years.
